Part 1 of 4 in "Is Bigger Always Better?"

Is Bigger always better?

The next few blogs will outline why bigger isn’t always better when it comes to selecting a stone for an engagement ring. Bigger isn’t better when you are sacrificing other diamond or stone qualities for just the mere size of the stone. There are four qualities that are popular when selecting a diamond. You know these as the four Cs. Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight. Only one of these, carat weight, refers to the size of your diamond the rest are more specific to the quality of your stone. Some experts cite the cut as being the strongest deciding factor, arguing that an excellent cut can compensate for shortcomings in the other three areas. Other experts believe that the colour is most important, as this is the trait most easily seen by the naked eye. But invariably, no one says that bigger is better.

She told me it wasn't that big of a deal...

Q: Is A Marriage Proposal That Big of A Deal?
A: Absolutely. According to research, 80% of women were disappointed in how they were proposed to by their fiancĂ©/husband. Your thoughtful effort towards creating her dream proposal will be a simple reminder of why her answer is “Yes!” You will be so proud when she brags about your amazing proposal rather than shies away from telling her friends.

So How to Pop the Question:

1. Public or Private
Who should be present at your marriage proposal? Just the two of you, her family and best friends, or perhaps a cheering crowd? REALLY think this one through.

2. Location
Location is key to setting the mood. This is where you can incorporate favorite memories together. This goes to show just how well you paid attention.

3. Attention to Details
Incorporating specific moments and details in your engagement proposal that she wouldn’t expect you to remember will leave her in awe. This is your chance to prove to her that you know her better than anyone else. DO NOT NEGLECT the little details; they are the keys to making her feel special.

Things to consider before you propose...

Some things to think about Before You Propose…

Timeless Traditions
Is it important to your girlfriend that you ask her father or someone in her family for their blessing? If so, even if you believe it’s an old tradition, take the time to call her family or take them out to dinner before you pop the question. This way you avoid any hurt and surprised family members.

Her Ring
Trying on rings beforehand is always a plus! Many women tend to love a certain style/setting until they try on the ring and find another style fits their finger better. If she wants the ring to be a complete surprise then do some research. Consult her best friends and listen carefully to any hints she drops. It is not a bad idea to have her friends take her ring shopping for fun.

Timing is Everything
Think ahead. Has she hinted at a Summer or Fall Wedding? It is always considerate to propose at least 6 months prior to the wedding. If she wants a shorter engagement then let her be the one to decide. Better safe on time than sorry.

Re-duce, Re-use, Re-cycle Grama's Pearls...

In many cases we all have a strand of pearls lying around in our jewelry box that never gets worn. It’s usually the strand of pearls you got for a 16th birthday, an heirloom passed down or a "first real job" congratulatory present...

Well since classics with a twist are all the rage for 2009, why don’t you come over to Skylight and we’ll update those Pearls for you with a custom design that you helped create.

A few pieces we’re working on are adding a large contrasting silk bow to a simple strand to create a much longer, more bohemian-chic appearance; we’ve also taken a classic strand and added oblong, colored and slightly “imperfect” pearls to create a much more wearable piece. Another way to really update your pearls is to create a statement Clasp. Find an old brooch or a favorite pendant and we can secure your pearls with that to create a designer piece. We can also use charms, decorated spacers, glass pieces or even faceted gems to update those pearls to a look that’s worth wearing daily. Pearls are timeless whether they’re in their most recognizable form or Glam’d up a bit with some modern trends so again let’s Re-use what you’ve got, dig out those pearls and stop on by to play designer for the day!

The Golden Rule of Treating a Gem?

Treat them as you'd want to be treated...Well almost. In the spirit of doing "whatever it takes" to look our best we must not forget that our gems/accessories also sometimes need a little help to achieve that look. Sometimes treatments of the gems can enhance the natural beauty of the stone; a little bleaching or some coatings of the gem, let's consider those the equivalent of a facial or a manicure for a stone. Other times treatments such as Surface Diffusion or Irridation can drastically alter the state of the stone, let's consider those treatments the face-lift or implant for the stone. Both ways are meant to enhance the stone and in reality a gem for one isn't a gem for all just like beauty treatments of today. So in the spirit of treating ourselves check out the full article on our website @ Skylightjewelers.com

Clouds and a Custom Guitar...

While our main focus here at Skylight Jewelers is Jewelry, we still love to support our local artists. Whether it's local artist Josh Simpson's magnificent inhabitated spheres; Martin Kremer's imaginative fused glass elipses or Wade Sylvester's hand made Guitar we appreciate their skill and are proud to showcase their items.
Recently we've seen an increased amount of play from our patrons on Wade Sylvester's guitar hand-crafted from imported Black limba, Cocobola Rosewood and Lutz spruce. While this guitar turns head by it's mere estetics and unique woods, the sound quality is what keeps guitarists coming back for more. It has been described as "unreal", "epic", "warm", "heart-felt" and by one patron "this guitar that allows a soul to speak." As each musician plays the guitar sings beautifully and it creates a whole new appreciation for not only the music and the guitar but also for the maker and that we have the privledge of carrying such a fantastic piece.
We hope that you music enthusiasts as well as music lovers will stop by and check out Wade's piece.
Tarrytown update: Rain, lots of Rain but very High spirits.

Tarrytown or Bust...

Well at 11am this morning the talented Mr.Spencer and his trust-worthy sidekick Raymond departed for the Crafts at Lyndhurst show put on by Artrider (http://www.artrider.com/). For the past 25 years Artrider and Lyndhurst have sponsered many upcoming and local artist with this venue. It's a New York staple and people come from all over to view, exhibit and showcase their goods. This year the duo will be exhibiting in style as we have a numerous amount of new pieces as well as a few classics (never fear the signature moonstones are always available). A few new pieces from Spencer are a beautiful pair of Tsavorite Garnet earrings that are unreal in the most luscious lime color and white gold setting. A pair of figurine earrings that hoop around as if the acrobat is in mid swing; also a circular cut Sunstone in a simple bezel pendant setting for a necklace but this Sunstone has specs of red running through it and when held up to the skin it looks as if it's got an ethereal glow behind it...Very exciting pieces!!!
We will keep you all up to date with all the Show details/stories as the reports come in!
