Spring is here and so is new Janis Kerman!

With the change of seasons comes a new selection of jewels from Janis Kerman and as always we are delighted to exhibit her beautiful designs in our gallery!  Pearls, turquoise, lapis, 18k & silver... all the classics we love plus a few rarities mixed with her unique design sense.  Bold and refreshing for spring - just what is needed after this long winter.  Stop by the gallery to see the full collection!

Tucson Gem Show - AND Minerals AND Fossils!

The first week of the annual Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show is almost over and alas, it's time for Spencer to return to the cold Northeast...   Here's a quick glimpse of some of the mysteries and treasures that he stumbled upon while exploring the farthest corners of this sprawling exhibition!  The fossils above are from a collection currently at the Granada Gallery (granada-gallery.com) in Tucson.

We have new jewelry by Janis Kerman for Spring!

Janis Kerman is inspired by the form, colors and textures of objects both artistic and common – her jewelry is based on geometric shapes:

their inherent strength, applicability, and timelessness. 

Her work shows preference for balance rather than symmetry.

Mali Garnet Floating Stone Ring

Designer hand-made ring with faceted Mali garnet, rubies & diamonds in 18k yellow gold setting

This olive green Mali garnet is named after the West African country where it is mined and is one of the rarer varieties of garnet.  With a hardness of 7 and wearability graded as 'very good', it is an excellent choice for jewelry.  

DIY: Diamond from Pencil Lead??!!

Scientists at Stanford University have accidentally created diamond out of graphite!

What is Palladium?

Here at Skylight we've been incorporating Palladium into our jewelry, and we've been getting a lot of questions about what exactly it is.  So here is some information to help clarify:

• Palladium is a naturally white metal and will not tarnish.  It does not required rhodium plating and will stay white forever. 
• Palladium is 30 times more rare than gold.
• Palladium is lighter than platinum, with about half the density of platinum.  Therefore, a piece of jewelry made in palladium would cost and weigh significantly less than the same piece made in platinum. 
• Palladium rarely causes allergic reactions, and if usually a safe alternative for those allergic to white gold.
• Palladium is durable and wears similarly to platinum.
